Overview The expansion of North District Hospital is a flagship initiative under the Hospital Authority’s "First Ten-Year Hospital Development Plan." Designed to address the surging healthcare demands of the growing New Territories North population, this project is a critical enhancement to Hong Kong's medical infrastructure. Welmetal (Huamei) is proud to serve as a key steel supplier, delivering the structural integrity required for this landmark development.
Scope & Scale The project involves the construction of a new Acute Block and the extensive renovation of existing facilities to alleviate strain on the New Territories East Cluster.
Capacity Surge: Upon completion, the total bed capacity will increase from ~600 to approximately 2,100 beds (an addition of ~1,500 beds).
Facility Upgrade: The expansion features 10 new operating theatres, a new Accident & Emergency (A&E) department, and expanded centers for Radiology, Cardiovascular Intervention, and Endoscopy. It also incorporates advanced infection control and isolation facilities.
Timeline: following preparatory works in 2019 and foundation works in 2021, the Main Works Contract officially commenced in September 2024, with a target completion timeline of approximately 6.5 years.
Welmetal’s Contribution: Precision & Reliability Constructing a major extension while keeping the existing hospital fully operational presents unique logistical and safety challenges. Welmetal leverages its robust supply chain capabilities to ensure the timely and precise delivery of high-specification steel. We understand that we are building more than just a structure; we are forging the backbone of a facility dedicated to saving lives. Our commitment ensures that construction progresses smoothly alongside necessary noise and dust control measures, minimizing disruption to current hospital services.
Impact This expansion is vital for resolving the overcrowding issues in the A&E department and enhancing patient space. By supplying foundational strength, Welmetal is helping to secure a healthier, more resilient future for the community.
